Created with Judy Robertson and the Data Education in Schools programme at the University of Edinburgh, the handbook empowers educators to teach AI with confidence, curiosity, and care.
It aligns with the Scottish curriculum for upper primary and secondary learners, showing how Gen AI can enhance learning when used responsibly and reflectively.

THE CHALLENGE
AI tools are evolving faster than classrooms can adapt.
The challenge was to translate a complex new curriculum into a handbook that teachers, policymakers, and AI experts would actually want to read — something approachable, beautifully structured, and visually alive.
The design needed to present detailed educational frameworks without feeling heavy; it had to inspire curiosity as much as convey rigour.

We paired a clear, elegant grid with handwritten notes, doodles, and scribbles that punctuate the pages — tiny reminders that this curriculum is a living, collaborative work in progress.
The structure remains precise, but the annotations bring warmth and humour, echoing the message on the cover: “A work-in-progress guide.”
The guiding principle was simple: make something teachers enjoy holding and reading.
